V is for visual delights

Yesterday, after visiting the Japanese Gardens behind the Buffalo History Museum, I walked to Delaware Park, which is near the AKG (formerly known as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery). There was so much to see and photograph in the park, which is one of the parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) to be connected to each other via parkways. His belief was that people in urban places needed to have green spaces accessible to them. The parks in Buffalo that he designed, in addition to Delaware Park, are Cazenovia Park, Front Park, Riverside Park, Front Park, and The Parade (now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Park). Unfortunately, since then, there have been some changes to the parks, including Delaware Park and the Humboldt Parkway, that have NOT inproved the parks. The changes were made to accommodate high speed highways that cut through the city. In my opinion, high speed highways don’t belong in cities, and adding these roads was a desecreation of Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision. But, back to the beauty of Delaware Park…. (my prompt for the Ultimate Blogging Challenge was to offer my “two cents,” and, there. I’ve done it.)
The centerpiece of Delaware Park is Hoyt Lake. It is lovely and the water seems glassy. In the summer, you can rent a paddleboat that looks just like a rubber ducky. I think that I’m going to have to do that because who doesn’t want to paddle a rubber ducky boat? Even if you’re not paddling a rubber ducky boat, this lake is a good place to relax with a book or with a picnic lunch. If you want to take a nap, there are now a whole series of hammocks attached to trees right along the lake.
Yesterday was the first time I had been to the rose garden in Delaware Park in April. I went there to see what was growing, but I didn’t expect to see roses. And I was right. Roses don’t bloom here this early. But I did see daffodils. Lots and lots of daffodils of different varieties. They were colorful and varied in size. So, it’s good to know that Delaware Park has a spring garden. I would definitely invite you to visit it.
What a radiant color!
