Today’s prompt from the Ultimate Blogging Challenge is for me to ask you to ask me anything.
This morning, I went to the Buffalo Launch Club, which is located on Grand Island and is known as the oldest power boat club in North America, for an event run by the Grand Island Lions Club. It’s called the Annual Kids’ Picnic. It’s a fun day for kids. They get boat rides, face painting, lunch, and the chance to run around outside, to sing karaoke and to have fun galore. The kids come from school programs that operate year round. This year, because of issues with wildfires in northwestern Ontario, Canada, many of the children who normally would come for the event were not there. For kids who have respiratory issues, the air quality is not safe for them. The kids who were able to come had fun, as did the volunteers.
At the time of the picnic, the air quality was considered moderate, but it has now deteriorated to the level of “unhealthy.” In fact, the map on my phone shows that my area is within the red zone of doom. Other areas are even worse. If you live in Toronto, please stay safe. The air quality is among the worst in the world and that’s on top of a terrible heat wave. And, bizarrely, there are people who still don’t believe that climate change is real.
There was plenty of food left over after the picnic, mostly hamburgers and hot dogs, but I have to watch what I eat because of food intolerances so I let it go. There will be other events with food that I can enjoy. And speaking about food, if you’re in the United States, please avoid lettuce about now because of the spread of the intestinal illness, cyclosporiasis. The main suspect is leafy greens packaged in bags and advertised as ‘prewashed.” Just do what I do when I look at anything containing gluten. I visualize a skull and crossbones above it, and the temptation to eat it instantly goes away.
I now have an air purifier that was lent to me. I am grateful for the help and support.

Yes, here in the Toronto area it has been terrible. The sky was orange earlier. It seems a little better now, but still not great. I was out for a bit this morning. I could smell it in the air as soon as I went out. A short while later my eyes were burning as was my throat.
My question is: what makes you laugh out loud?
Thank you, Barbara. The air quality was okay in the morning, which was good because I got to ride in a boat, but it deteriorated in the afternoon. Yes, I could smell it, too, and the sky was a weird shade of yellow. I hope that you are feeling better soon.

Yes, I live in British Columbia, and we have had serious air quality problems and fires, worse than ever. Right now, it is not too bad in my small town. It certainly is a difficult time and I hope it gets better in your area soon. Diana

Alice, I’m so sorry to hear about the fires! I empathize. I am in Phoenix, in the southern half of Arizona, and our state goes from over 7000 feet elevation in the north to 50 feet below sea level at the Phoenix Airport. So, with fires raging currently upstate, the airshed flows the smoke nicely downstate, and we are seeing and breathing it here. I try not to think what the upstate natural areas will look like in a month. Thank you for helping the kids have fun! I so enjoy your narratives and images! My question: is Grand Island an island? How big is it, and how do you access it? And why are you living there? Is it expensive to live there? <3
