beautiful butterflies

Today’s blog post is all about one of my favorite insects, the butterfly

Here are some interesting factoids about butterflies, according to AI. They can taste with their feet, drink liquids with a straw-like tongue called a proboscis, and they fly using four wings covered in microscopic scales. As insects, they have exoskeletons, which are made of the same material as human fingernails. Their eyes definitely have human eyes beat. They have 6,000 lenses, and they can see the entire color spectrum, including ultraviolet and infrared. Are you jealous yet? I sure am!

Monarch butterflies are the ultimate adventurers. They travel approximately 2,000 miles, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The monarchs that migrate have considerably longer lifespans than the ones that stay put. Migratory monarchs live six to nine months, while the butterflies that we see in the summer live anywhere from two to six weeks.

Here is a monarch butterfly pollinating a plant. Although less efficient as pollinators than bees, butterflies are busy and active. Monarchs and swallowtail butterflies have their preferences. They like the sun, coneflowers, native milkweed, and blazing star, which is a lovely purple plant.

Monarch butterflies are beautiful, but here is a really odd factoid about their wings. Butterfly wings are actually transparent. The color comes from the microscopic scales covering the wing membranes. There are actually thousands of these scales, which is very astounding in my opinion. The result is incredibly beautiful.

I saw this butterfly during a Garden Walk in Buffalo. It’s a red admiral, which is a very common butterfly to see all over the world. It’s a medium-sized butterfly, and seeing it symbolizes spiritual awakening, transformation, hope, and renewal.

I saw these butterflies in Savannah, Georgia. They are gulf fritillary butterflies. These medium-sized butterflies are also known as passion butterflies. They are mostly found in the southern part of the United States, but they’ve also been seen in Mexico and Central America and even as far south as South America and as far west as Hawaii. They symbolize transformation, resilience, and spiritural rebirth.

This is one of the most common species of butterfly, known as the painted lady. They are found everywhere in the world, except for South America.

This is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. It was named for its wings, which look like the tail of a swallow. They are large butterflies, and they are very common. They can be seen in woodlands, parks, along roadsides, and in gardens. This butterfly is the state butterfly of several states, including Alabama, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. They symbolize transformation, new beginnings, grace, and the free nature of the human soul, as well as optimism.

Next time: I don’t know. It remains to be seen!

  1. Your mix of science, personal sightings, and symbolism makes butterflies feel both fascinating and meaningful. I’ll definitely be looking more closely the next time I spot one!

    1. You’re very welcome. Yes, monarchs are incredible butterflies, and I do love seeing them. I actually saw a few in Ecuador back in 2011, so I know that they travel far.

  2. What great information on butterflies and of course beautiful photographs. The swallowtails are my favorite, the blue swallowtail was the one that followed my daughter and me around when we went to Cherokee in the summer of 2024 to celebrate Rich’s memory and then the yellow one came to me in my back yard in September of 2024 and walked up my arm and stayed with me for an hour. I know it was Rich’s spirit.

    1. Thank you so much, Martha, for sharing that story about the swallowtail butterfly that visited you and your back yard. What a wonderful experience you had with that butterfly. That must have felt so wonderful.
