experiencing the drama of seasonal changes
Over the winter glaciers, I see the summer glow. And through the wind-piled snowdrift, the warm rosebuds below.

Today, I went out with my friend Tom to experience the wonder of a river filled with ice. Tom told me that, when he first looked at the river, it was clogged with ice. By the time that I got there, there was plenty of ice but it was flowing freely, racing down the river. It was a sight to behold, and was, for sure, amazing and awesome. The removal of the boom from the Niagara River is a sign that spring is on its way. Yes, I know that the calendar says that spring arrived a few weeks ago, but this is Western New York, and we are always a bit behind. Yesterday morning, it was warm and sunny, and this morning, the snow fell and, by this afternoon, the winds howled across Grand Island from one side to the other.
So anyway, what’s left to say? Oh, did I set a theme word for the Ultimate Blogging Challenge for this month? I hadn’t, so I will do that now. Openness. That sounds like a good one. Open to the possibilities of what I might see during the course of this month as I complete this photography challenge. At least one picture a day for the month. Who knows where I will go or what I will discover? Keep following me to find out what’s next!
I love your photo of the river with the flowing ice, Alice. It reminds me of times when I had my dog, Sheba. Winter or summer we would go to the dog park by the river. We walked and ran on the frozen river in winter. A photo a day for this month is a good idea. I look forward to seeing them.
Thank you so much, Lily, and I am so happy that my post reminds you of the happiness that you shared with your precious Sheba.
Looking forward to a month full of amazing and awesome posts from you Alice!!
The picture really depicts the cold.
I had never thought about doing a picture a day. I’m not much of a photographer, but it is an intriguing thought.
Thank you. I am happy that you could feel the coldness in the picture!!!
Welcome back to another great UBC Alice! Your photo is magnificent and brings back memories from when I lived in upstate NY and would visit the falls!
Thank you, Martha. I am so happy to be able to participate in the UBC this time! I’m also really enjoying my website. Doing the design for my blog posts seems so much easier with this format. It’s very user friendly, and I really appreciate that. I hope that you and Lia are very happy and healthy!
Alice, thank you for sharing the river experience! Awesome!
You’re very welcome. I love the river and am so happy to share it.
I love your river photo with the floating ice. I’m from Australia where this would be a very rare sight, if it was ever seen
Thank you so much. I am very happy to give you a glimpse to a part of the world very different from your own. Also, I love your family history stories, as I cannot trace my family history very far at all.
The world can indeed be an amazing and awesome place. I’m in Los Angeles so seasonal changes are very subtle and often not very noticeable. Aside from the obvious temperature fluctuations (which are rarely very extreme), mostly I gauge the seasonal changes by the way the sunlight comes through my windows. It’s a nice climate, but sometimes I miss the radical seasonal changes I used to experience when I lived back East.

Seasonal changes are pretty dramatic here in Western New York. But it makes for some good photo ops!!! Which is a really great thing!
Looking forward to seeing more of your photographic talent Alice. I enjoyed reading about spring in western New York state. I hope you get the warmth soon.
The odyssey from winter to spring has fits and starts here, as well. But that green is rising up and a few blossoms are coming back. Walking my dog everyday keeps me in tune with the seasons!
