the slow motion crochet project

About a year and a half ago, I started making an afghan. I chose to make small squares, and I thought that this would be a quick process.

(insert the sound of a buzzer). As it turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This afghan requires more than 200 small squares, and I am still in the process of making those squares.

The squares are put together in groups of nine. In each group, I use four colors and then, in the center square, I add a fifth, which is chosen at random.

I have crocheted close to 200 little squares and more than twenty groups of nine.

Once I finish making my big squares (groups of nine), I will piece them together with black yarn and then make a border. There are no big squares that are identical. They have the same pattern, but not the same color combination. My goal was to create a crochet version of a patchwork quilt.

Crocheting this afghan has been an adventure. I’ve really enjoyed creating different color combinations. Crochet is unique because it is both an art and a craft. It’s a craft because it involves the technical skills of creating the stitches. It’s also art because it’s all about color combination.
