Yesterday, it snowed. I was staring through the window at it with a wicked glint in my eyes.
“Winter,” I declared (fake) forcefully. “You’re fired.”
Well, um, that didn’t work. So, as the cliche goes, if you can’t beat them, join ’em. Which I did today when I had the opportunity to take a photography tour around Grand Island. The sky was overcast and it was a bit on the cold side. Nevertheless, a good day to take pictures. The pictures that I am sharing today are of ice in the Niagara River.
This winter, 95 percent of Lake Erie was covered by ice. It was more ice than usual. This amount of ice could prove disastrous if it were to flow freely into the Niagara River. It could potentially cause ice jams, which could have negative effects on the production of hydroelectric power, as well as damaging shoreline property. To prevent those jams from occurring, an ice boom is placed in Lake Erie annually. It’s usually removed by April 1st, but this year, the ice buildup was dramatic, so much so that parts of the ice boom have been damaged. Any decision to remove the boom on time or late has to be made by the International Joint Commission/International Niagara Board of Control. And now, the ice boom is in the process of being removed, in parts, because of the damage to its sections.
Even though much of the ice boom is still in place, there is a great deal of ice floating on the Niagara River.
There are some big chunks of ice floating in the Niagara River. Here is a close up view of the ice in the river.
Tomorrow, I will share a few bird photos that I’ve taken lately.
Winter weather can be such a joy (NOT). When I lived in north-central Pennsylvania, we got the lake effect snow from Erie. It was May before the snow all melted!
