could you be… the culprit?

Today’s Ultimate Blogging Challenge prompt is to write about something that is fun. “What do I do in my personal or professional life that’s fun?”

I enjoy anything that gives me a chance to escape the frustrations of daily life and helps me to reach beyond myself. One thing that I do is to participate in a weekly play reading group via Zoom. It meets once a week, and we read all sorts of plays, from Greek tragedies to Shakespeare to very new plays. It’s a fun time for me. I get to sing, use character voices, and overact to my heart’s content. We don’t see the scripts in advance and the cold reading is super fun.

Another thing that I have fun doing is to participate in murder mystery events. The performers and audience get a dinner and, between courses, the mystery unfolds. At first, the characters seem friendly as they talk about themselves and the victim. Then the mood shifts as the characters, who are all suspects, point fingers at one another and blame one another for the victim’s untimely demise. Before the dessert course, the group blaming is at its most intense. People are now exposing one another’s faults in a ferocious way! +

Could she be the culprit? Look at how she’s disguised! She is obviously trying to get away with a very dastardly deed!

Maybe she is the culprit! Look at all of the aliases she’s created for herself! It’s obvious that she is trying to hide under another name and under someone else’s identity. She obviously committed the aforementioned dastardly deed!

Here is our culprit and her armed partner in crime!

Here are the detectives who are checking over all the clues in an attempt to solve the case and catch the villain!

Could these two be the co-conspirators in this murder mystery? Maybe, but it’s more likely that they are just red herrings, even if they aren’t actually… red…

Is the murder too hard to solve? Do we need the assistance of the K-9?

“Not yet,” says the chief detective. “Have no fear. The friends of the culprit will spill the beans!”

We must not permit the culprit to fly away. You know how wicked those murderers can be! Don’t forget Colonel Mustard with a rope in the Conservatory! Anyone can hide behind Colonel Mustard or amongst the plants!

After dessert, the end of the story is told. The culprit is revealed, along with the motive for the wicked murder!

“It’s a good thing that we caught this unrepentent killer before she completely vanished!”

  1. What a fun post and a fun imagination.
I love that you participate in the weekly readings of plays and the murder mysteries. What has been your favourite play so far?

    1. Thank you!
Some plays that I’ve really enjoyed have been “Antigone,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “”The Bald Soprano” by Eugene Ionesco, and “Noises Off.”

  2. What a fun post! And thank goodness I was not the culprit. I’ve got enough trouble, LOL. Looks like you had a fun trip or excursion. And how neat to be in a fun group you can participate in through Zoom. I never thought of that. I wonder if I could find some kind of singing group I could do that with. Or a couch choir (do you ever watch those Pub Choir videos?). I might look into it!

  3. Alice you are one of the grooviest women I know! I love that you do the cold play readings on Zoom. I’d love to be a fly on the wall for one of those! So much fun.

  4. Alice, you are really having fun! I can relate to murder mystery participation. I love to watch cozy mysteries, especially those from Britain and New Zealand. The clues and guessing are major fun!

    1. Thank you. Yes, I’m having so much fun~ Here’s a funny tale for you. My mom and I used to watch murder mysteries on TV. It was fun to watch with her, but she was too clever for me. She solved the mystery halfway through the show and then gleefully announced who the killer was. I asked her not to do that, and after that, she sat and smirked halfway through the show. Fun times, for sure.
