This painting is all about color mixing. I have a set of three different colored chalk paints, which can be painted in a transparent style or as more of an opague style. The paints that I have are red, yellow, and blue, and I can mix them to get the colors that I need. I also have a brush market for the details that I want to add to my painting.
Chalk paint is a really interesting medium because I can use it on different surfaces, including watercolor paper and wood. I’m really excited to test the paint out on wood and see how it works and whether I prefer to paint the wood with chalk paint or with acrylic paints. Until now, I’ve always used acrylic paints on wood.
During the autumn, when I was participating in a 15-day version of the 100-day art challenge, I painted a bison with acrylic paint. My goal was to create a stained glass effect

I got the wooden bison at the Erie County Fair. There is a group of woodworkers who have an exhibit and who sell unfinished pieces each year. If I go back to the County Fair, I will buy several unfinished pieces and I will paint some with acrylic paint and others with chalk paint to see what the differences are. I think that it will be a fun experiment. Months away, however. In the meantime, I think that I will just paint on. And, as the world traveler blogger Doug would say, blog on!
Your exploration of chalk paint is so creative, especially the way you’re experimenting with color mixing and opacity. It’s great that you’re comparing how chalk paint and acrylic work on different surfaces like wood. The stained glass effect on the bison sounds stunning, and testing out new techniques at the fair with unfinished pieces will definitely be a fun project! Keep painting and sharing your journey—it’s so inspiring.
Alice, I don’t think I have seen stained glass effects on wood before. What fun! Not being very brave, I would be tempted to create “seams” with acrylic paint, let it dry, then fill in the remaining areas. But I got that idea from a couple who turned a small plain window into a stained-glass looking piece. Keep having fun!
I love you acrylic stained glass bison Alice! One of our sub contractors when we had our decorating shop did chalk painting on wood. Can’t wait to see you chalk paint bison!
