A is for adaptation

Yesterday, I saw this outside. I was so excited to see something alive and yellow. I had to go take a picture of it at once. So I did! There wasn’t a moment to lose. Today, I saw something different! It was… snow.

What kind of April fool’s day trick is that?

Okay, I can’t deny it. April Fool’s Day is my favorite holiday. There should be a parade to celebrate it. Whoopie cushions and fake spiders thrown out of vehicles would be a fine touch. Oh, wait. No parade. The pandemic still hasn’t ended. Last year, I was sure that the pandemic was going to last for…weeks.

It has, indeed, lasted for weeks. It’s just been a few more weeks than I anticipated. More than a year’s worth of weeks, experienced one at a time. One zoom meeting at a time. One YouTube church service at a time.

One batch of homemade applesauce at a time, sometimes made with odd ingredients, including super tart crab apples, which were so tiny and so hard to chop that I will never do a rerun on that experiment. I still have applesauce in the freezer, and I am still hoping to share it with other people in some sort of small group, socially distanced, meal.

During this bizarre year, collecting the apples had become a huge adventure. My adventure was supposed to be walking with a group with the Walk for a Nuclear Free Future, but that couldn’t be. The plan was to walk across New York State. It was going to be a big adventure, but walking with a group during a pandemic is truly not an option, so the adventure was canceled.

It is amazing and awesome that human beings can adapt to that much change. We talk about “a new normal” or “going back to normal,” but that’s still in the future. And who even knows what “normal” is anymore. I’ll explore that word later!

  1. You could have used apples for your letter! I planned to enter the challenge but the month came too quick for my brain to get in action!

  2. We have definitely adapted to whatever happens now.. spring one day, snow the next? no worries…
And yay I found some apples already for that scavenger hunt…

  3. The Spanish Flu a hundred years ago gives me hope that this won't last more than three years. More and more I wonder if COVID is going to follow the same pattern. So far it seems to. I'm just grateful that there hasn't been near the predicted millions of deaths that scientists were projecting last year.

  4. Thanks so much for visiting my blog! Someone commented about the challenge yesterday – mentioning apples! I didn't even know until that person commented!! I've never had a Lady Alice apple – I'll have to look for those!!

We can adapt to just about anything. I love your photo of the flowers.  I did the same thing.
