A day in the life of… me!

Today’s blog post is all about Alice’s adventure on February 26th, 2021. I was going to write and post this yesterday, but discovered that exhaustion took over and my brain wasn’t going there.

Yesterday morning, I could already sense that the day was going to be challenging. My head was achey and I felt the slightest twinge of vertigo. Ugh, did I have to get out of bed? Um. Errrr… Yes. Maybe I should check the weather report to see if there was any connection between my less than 100 percent feeling and the weather?

Rain. Saturday and Sunday. Sinus pain and pressure on Friday. Yep, checks out. I got up, slowly, feeling my joints creak as if they were rusty hinges. No, not really. I just like saying “rusty hinges” because the visual is really great. And there’s a sound effect. C-r-e-a-k…

Oil! (Where is that oil can when I need it?)

I got up and got myself ready slowly for the new day. My first Big Activity was Kitchen Fun in the form of an omelette. This is a meal that lends itself well to the concept of immediate gratification, as it doesn’t take long to make an omelette. The flavor of the day was onion and cheese! I garnished my plate with sliced strawberries, and, for a beverage, I had some smoothie that was left over from two days earlier. The ingredients in the smoothie were strawberries, blueberries, apple cider, and plain Greek yogurt.

Oh yeah and kitchen fun is always good because I have been gradually shifting the theme of my kitchen to sunflowers!

My big morning activity was a book club meeting with the Grand Island Golden Age Center, called “read and feed.” The book club meets both in person (with social distancing) and on zoom. I joined in on Zoom. The discussion was about a book called The Giver of Stars, by Jojo Moyes.

It’s a fictional account of a very real historical event. Between 1935 and 1943, the U.S. government ran a program in eastern Kentucky, though the Works Progress Administration, called the Packhorse Librarian program. The packhorse librarians were women who rode many miles through Kentucky’s rugged mountains to bring books to people who normally would not have access to libraries. The illiteracy rates were high then and are still relatively high today. After the Packhorse Library program was discontinued, a bookmobile program was instituted, and that continues to this day.

Oh, back to the headache issue. I found that a bath with pleasant smelling bath salts really helps. It’s probably the moisture in the air that makes everything feel better, at least temporarily!

In the afternoon, I ran some errands with the help of a friend, who provided transportation. The errands were successful and, when I returned home, my friend let me use his binoculars so I could see the woodpecker in the tree. It was truly an attractive bird and was very busy. Too far away for photography, unfortunately.

Another afternoon activity was the start of this week’s self-portrait. As I write, it is still a work in progress. It is my second self-portrait with a limited palette. This time, the colors that I am using are green (two shades), red, and yellow. Also black. I am amazed by what happens when I mix colors. So, yes, if you’re asking, I am using complementary colors, which are opposite colors on the color wheel.

I had more kitchen fun and made dinner, as a result of that successful set of errands. One of the successes was that I found that asparagus was on sale and that there were coupons at the fish counter for a discount. What’s not to like about on sale and discount? Oh yeah, and rice was a BOGO sale thingie (buy one, get one). So I got one bag of jasmine rice and one bag of brown rice.

After dinner, I had to make a video of me doing a reading for the youtube church service. I did a few takes, then sent the best one. Later, I looked at it and noticed that I looked like I was half asleep. But it’s sent. This video thing. For sure, it’s an adventure. When I was in journalism school a zillion years ago (the number keeps growing but I NEVER exaggerate… well, hardly ever), I made the decision that broadcast journalism was definitely not for me. I never wanted to appear on camera. And now… life does present its interesting twists and turns.

What was left to do for the day? Write this blog post and wash dishes. I succeeded in washing the dishes. The blog post? My brain was on strike. It wasn’t happening. Hence, the day after. I finished a crochet square that I was making with some 100 percent wool yarn, and I got ready to go to sleep.

And that’s a wrap! Or a day! Or take five. Or whatever. Or just the end!!! Or -30-. That’s what we used to write at the end of a news article. I’ll be darned if I know what -30- means. I still put it at the end of a news story, despite being clueless. ????

Alice, you made me chuckle! What a great humorous view you take of so many things. I love it! Your day sounds great! Especially the omelet. And I also have no idea what that -30- thing means. Oh well, a little mystery may be a good thing!

  6. You always make me smile, Alice. Sometimes, I even laugh out loud. Your day sounds like it was a fun one. At least, the way you recount it does.

  7. As I have said before, your energy awes me!! My headache-y day would have been way less full of activities…
