Images of my trip to New York City

saying good bye in Buffalo

Yesterday, I took a train from Buffalo, New York, to New York City. According to schedule, the train trip was about eight hours. But reality and schedules not being an exact match, the trip took about eleven hours.

Train travel in New York State is slow because, in much of the state, a freight company owns the tracks.

Rochester, N.Y.

When a freight train is on the tracks, that train has priority, and the Amtrak train must slow down or even stop.

When we finally arrived outside of Penn Station, we had to stop because we had a diesel engine and only electrical engines are permitted inside of Penn Station. So we had to have an engine change.

It was also determined that we did not have enough electricity to get into the station on our own. Apparently, the little engine that could… really couldn’t.

  1. I didn't know this about New York. Those clicks are gorgeous, I wouldn't mind waiting in the train watching such mesmerizing sights. πŸ™‚

  2. I love train travel and admired your sunset, but the rest of it – just no. I would have been pulling my hair out at the Penn Station "engine switch" thing (thank you for the heads up). I'm seriously thinking about a train trip across country – supposedly three days. I can't sleep on trains, though, so I would have to think really hard about it.

  3. Wonderful to see you again, Alice!! I don't think I could handle an 11-hour trip in the same day. When I evacuated for Irma, it took 8 hours (should have taken 4) and it practically flattened me! Good on you for making it through the delays, and stress. ~Jeanine

  4. Such beautiful images. 3 Hours delay is pretty boring. In India, long distance journeys by train are mostly pleasant ones.

  5. Beautiful pictures. Definitely worth the wait πŸ™‚ I had no idea about the freight train taking priority over Amtrack in New York. Thanks for sharing
