my independence day reflection

Today is Independence Day for the United States, and it makes me think…

In 2001, just after 9/11, we were lost and confused

And we hugged each other and prayed with each other

And we were there for each other.

When U.S. airspace was closed and the skies were silent

Our neighbors in Canada provided safety and hospitality for our people who couldn’t come all of the way home

And we were grateful and we knew that we weren’t alone

In 2020, when so many of our friends became very sick

and we had to isolate in our homes and we felt alone and scared

we reminded each other to stay safe and we dropped off food for struggling sick people

And we cared about each other

In 2024, the sky went dark in midday

we put on special glasses and watched the moon pass in front of the sun

we wept when we saw the corona

it was a magical sight

seeing the ring in the dark sky helped our sense of wonder

we loved it together

Today in 2026, we wonder what happened to together

And we wonder how we can regain it.

The world has become a puzzling place

but it’s all we have…

  1. Well written, but it left me almost sad because I used to live in DC. I raised my son there and I could not think about being therefore whatever you wanna call it. And I’m sad for the country for myself. I was in Boston for the 200th and I will keep that memory in mind as another of the things you’re talking about – the togetherness. Thank you for what you said.
