my summertime blogging adventure

So… I was really busy with all things newspaper, and I fell behind in my own art and writing projects. But now, I have the chance to catch up… and just in time for the July edition of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge. I’m going to talk about my plans for the blogging challenge.

Have I pre planned the posts for the month?

Nope. Who knows what the month might bring? I would feel boxed in if I pre planned my posts. A lot of people appreciate that structure of knowing what they are going to write in advance of the challenge, but that’s not me. I am okay with not knowing and with the randomness of writing a post that day. Which is why my posts sometimes come late. I’ve been having the adventure. And then, I write about it. I know that there’s going to be a Grand Island Garden Walk and a Buffalo Garden Walk and a Paddles Up event. And it’s all exciting and good and who knows what I will find there?

What about those art projects? Will you share updates?

I’m so happy you asked. (Oh, wait. I’m self interviewing. How odd of me to talk to me in the second person!) But the answer is yes. Today, I am sharing pictures from Inktober 52. I was a month behind schedule, probably because I had to write articles with lots of numbers. Oh my. When I was in journalism school, I decided that I wanted to be a film critic and have a really happy career in movie theaters. It never happened. I did, however, do a happy dance and I yelped, “I never have to do math again in my life!”

Um. Oops. I get to write about budgets. School budgets. Town budgets. I also get to write about people fighting over budgets, making speeches about budgets, voting down budgets, saying no to budgets… you get the idea. My celebration about never having to do math again was impressively premature.

There’s actually a lot of math in art and music, and I do both so what was I even thinking. Music has rhythm and art has perspective. Even when you’re drawing something simple, like flip flops, you need to show some perspective in the drawing. I chose to draw flip flops because the prompt for week twenty-three of Inktober 52 was “flip.” So why not flip flop? Especially today because it’s hotter than… you know where. Also political candidates used to call each other flip floppers. Which, considering how toxic political campaigns have become, is actually funny now.

Here’s the prompt for week twenty-four. It’s beach. Bearnacle is having fun on the beach with his big surfboard. Who knows where he can go with that surfboard? He is ready for adventure!

The prompt for week twenty-five was father. Because it arrived close to Fathers Day. I used to love Fathers Day. Frequently, my mom’s birthday and Fathers Day were one and the same. And their anniversary followed a few days later. I just called it Parents Week. It was a celebration of all things parental.

When the heat wave is over, I’m going to walk to the cemetery and I will share pictures and stories about my brilliant parents, who could be funnier than heck when they wanted to be.

Tomorrow, I think that I will share more pictures.

  1. I love your creativity. It’s so refreshing. I love this. Sometimes the best stories are the ones we never planned to tell. It sounds like you’ve got a wonderful mix of events and unexpected moments ahead.
