One of Grand Island’s newest nature trails is located at Veterans Park, a busy town park that hosts Little League games, the Miracle League (a place for kids with special needs to enjoy playing sports), a concession stand, and various other amenities. There is already a paved trail at Veterans Park. In addition, the Grand Island Memorial Library is located on the grounds of Veterans Park, and the library is in the process of creating a Reading Garden outside of the building, which will add to the outdoor opportunities available at the park. The newest trail is a nature trail that goes through less developed land. It’s a great place to observe both the good and the bad of nature. The good is all of the trees and the great variety of plants. The bad is that some of those plants are aggressively invasive species, such as phragmite, which clog the creeks and push away the cattails. Cattails are beneficial because they reduce the effects of pollution by absorbing nutrients such as phosphorus and other pollutants from the water. Thus, they are considered to be a natural filter for pond water.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this tour of this lovely trail! I plan on visiting more trails and will share the images here, so stay tuned!
