the beauty of words

Today, I went to the library to read to a dog. I brought a book of poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and I read to a very sweet golden retriever and her very sweet human. This golden retriever is a therapy dog, and she was calm and relaxed. I sat on the floor with her and her human, and I spent half an hour reading out loud. The experience felt very peaceful. Afterwards, I walked home, and that, too, felt very peaceful.

It reminds me that words can be healing. So, today, I am sharing beautiful words from poets and random photographs that I’ve taken.

“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” – Langston Hughes.
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” – T.S. Eliot
“Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul – and sings the tunes without the words – and never stops at all.” – Emily Dickinson
“:All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” – Edgar Allan Poe
“To live in this world, you must be able to do three things, to love what is mortal, to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it, and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.” – Mary Oliver

  1. What a great idea, Alice! Next time, have the golden retriever read to you 🙂

I think that it’s great that your library lets dogs inside! How considerate! Many businesses around me will put water out for dogs to drink!

    1. I would love to listen to the golden retriever read. I have heard these Christmas songs sung by dogs. People who are far more clever than I are able to arrange a variety of barks to sound like a complete song. It’s astounding and so cute.
It’s nice for businesses to put the water out for dogs. When I walk on this beautiful riverwalk alongside the Erie Canal, I notice water bowls that are put out for dogs there!

  2. Beautiful poems. Thanks for the inspiration. I like the T.S. Elliot poem for today. It feels appropriate for what I am going through. It’s so lovely that you were reading to a therapy dog and her human! How do you get to do that? Namaste….

    1. Thank you so much! My library offers a read to a dog program monthly. All I had to do was to sign up. In fact, I signed up on Friday and was told there weren’t many people signed up so I had my choice of times. When I went there, I was so happy to read to that sweet golden retriever. What an absolutely adorable dog!

  3. What a lovely activity – and nice to walk down!!
Sunday was b-u-s-y so I’ve just finished my Monday post … my current show is Sue Taylor, FB[eye] – it would be fun to read to Levi, her ‘hearing dog’ ….

My friends and I walked about 5 blocks from our church to a favorite Cafe for dinner, then back. The twinkle lights are still up on our main street (Third Street) and it was chilly, but not raining!
