Getting ready for the trek

(It’s day six of Inktober, and the prompt for today is “trek.”)

It was the night before the Long Trek to the Mountains, which was when the Bears gathered to sing, dance, tell stories and to give names to the babies that had been born since the last Trek. The Trek didn’t occur every year because of weather. When the snow flew early or when ice formed on the side of the mountain well before winter, the bears skipped the Long Trek in favor of an early hibernation.

This year, the weather was warmer than usual, and the bear family was happy and relaxed after dinner. After Baby Bear was sent to bed, he sat up and looked out the window at the sun setting and at the trail that he would walk on with his parents and with other bears. He imagined, not the mountains, but the sea, glittering in the moonlight. But he knew that, wherever he was, whether it was the mountains or the sea, he would be in the place he belonged at that moment. He saw the sun go down and the moon rise and the stars twinkle around the moon.

Baby Bear sang a song to the moon and to the moon:

Good night, sun.
Hello moon.
Good night, sun.
Hello moon.
Bring magic to me
as I lie asleep
Pour star dust on me
as I gently sleep.
Good night, sun
Hello, moon.
be my companion
during the long night.
Good night, sun
Hello, moon.

    1. Thank you so much, Martha! Feel free to share these stories with Lia. She is welcome to draw Baby Bear. And I would love to use one of her illustrations in a future episode.
