a tour of buffalo’s market arcade

With this month’s version of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge being almost over, I have to say that everything about it has been a big surprise for me. I rarely plan an entire month’s posts in advance, although I usually have an idea of the theme. This month, I changed things up. I decided that, because I knew it was going to be an unusually busy month, I would skip the A to Z challenge, which I normally do in April. I might do it again next year but that’s a long time off and, for sure, I almost never plan that far in advance. I am not by nature a planner and that far in the future is just a blank slate that is best kept that way.

I had to focus on this month’s activities and projects, including the Ultimate Blogging Challenge, a weekly art class in downtown Buffalo, a lot of work for the newspaper, and more. So much more. I wasn’t planning on posting so much about Buffalo, but that’s what happened and I’m actually happy that it did.

Today’s post is all about the Market Arcade, which is a beautiful example of neoclassical commercial architecture. It was designed as an indoor market. It is stunning, but, when I visited it this morning, none of the businesses were open so I focused on the lovely details of this building.

As you approach, you see this:

The details are exquisite. If you arrive in mid day, you can see galleries of beautiful photographs. CEPA Gallery describes itself as a contemporary photography and visual arts studio. They offer some gorgeous and thought-provoking exhibits, featuring photographers who tell stories with their images. When the Buffalo Alt Press was in its heyday, I used to review those exhibits. I also went to their events, and that was a real learning experience for me. I was not a photographer at the time. When I began working for the Island Dispatch, I was told that I had to take my own pictures, and the combination of visual arts training plus the things that I learned from visiting so many photography exhibits really helped me become a much better photographer because, for sure, I did not go to school for photography.
Columns seem kind of Roman.

Here are some details, close up.
As I walked into the building, I saw this. It’s really delightfully ornate, and I felt at home here. I had been here many times in the past, and it was nice to return.
Here’s a close up view of the floor.
Here are some benches to relax and watch the world go by.
Or you could enjoy a lovely lunch for two. (or one with sketchbook and art supplies)
The font on the sign reminds me of times past.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed your tour of the Market Arcade. I’ve had such a good time sharing the sights of Buffalo with you. There is so much more, and I will share some of that in the July Ultimate Blogging Challenge, including the Buffalo Garden Walk and the murals along Hertel Avenue in north Buffalo!
