springtime for alice and buffalo

at last…

Dog violets growing near fences. (EDIT: Thank you, Janice Gill, for the plant identification!)

I was in downtown Buffalo yesterday, and I was so happy to see gardens full of thriving flowers. I saw daffodils, tulips, crocuses, and lenten roses, along with some little wild flowers. It was also warmer than it had been for a while. Since spring is my favorite season, I felt as if I were in my element. Here is a sample of some of the flowers that I saw yesterday.

Daffodils come in a variety of colors, and here are two of the more common ones. Some daffodils have very vivid centers (cups), which is pure delight.
Here are some daffodils with their friend, a tulip that is just about ready to open. I love tulips but I never plant them here because tulips are a delicacy for deer and rabbits. They are the deer and rabbit equivalent of chocolate for humans. I don’t think that there are herds of deer running loose in downtown Buffalo, getting excited about digging up tulip bulbs and taking a taste test.
These daffodils are almost completely white
happy tulips just opening. Speaking about tulips, did you know that there are huge fields of tulips in the Netherlands? But, even there, the people who grow tulips have to be very careful about the deer. They might build fences or use a deer-resistant spray. Another way to protect tulips is the plant daffodils nearby. They are deer resistant, mainly because they taste terrible and no self respecting deer would taste test a daffodil.

Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse features more than seven million bulbs over 32 hectares (79 acres). That’s a lot of tulips that have to be protected from hungry deer.
Here are some vivid crocuses, featuring yellow and purple (which are complementary colors on the color wheel).
here are a few more crocuses
Aren’t these lovely? They are lenten roses.

Tomorrow: Some of the murals in downtown Buffalo

  1. I didn’t know that about tulips and deer…

The joke I tell is, ‘What flower is between your nose and chin?’ ‘Two lips…’ *mom jokes*
