where I live

Today’s photography prompt was “where you live.” And where I live is very snowy and cold, and, apparently, there’s a lake effect snow warning. My phone let me know about it, with a horrifying screech. I thought someone was in terrible peril because, usually, the horrifying screech is used to provide information about an Amber alert. But no, it was just snow. Lots of snow potentially. Apparently, the phone is unable to be subtle about the weather forecast, as it warns of an “extraordinary threat to life or property.” In other words, “you are in terrible peril.”

Sometimes, these warnings are pretty accurate, while, other times, they really miss the mark. The effectiveness of the warnings is a bit questionable, and the result is that a lot of skeptical people don’t believe any of the warnings. And, when you don’t believe any bad weather warning, you’re risking putting yourself in danger. Fortunately, my wonderful town supervisor, Pete Marston, has been known to travel all over the town on his snowmobile to rescue stranded people. Which is a really good thing. There are times when we all need to be saved from ourselves.

I think back to happy times involving activities in this pavilion at St. Martin-in-the-Fields church. There’s been a chicken barbecue and a basket raffle, ourdoor church services, and movie nights. This past summer, the pavilion got a great upgrade, which means that it now has a floor. Of course, during the winter, the pavilion is basically the hope of warmer days and more outdoor activities.

To me, this looks very peaceful. And that’s what I like about winter. It feels very quiet and very peaceful. It’s a good time of year to do those indoor projects and then go outside to capture more images of a world covered by a blanket of snow.

Tomorrow, I am announcing the winner of the blogging contest! Come back tomorrow to meet your winner!!!

  1. Alice, how peaceful your snow scenes are. For me, it only takes an inch or so of snow to transform the World within view to a peaceful wonderland, a new beginning. I love to be the first one to get out there and walk on it. I’m suddenly taken back to my college days, when we had a few inches of space between one window pane and the screen. In the Winter, we kept cream, tuna, and other foodstuffs, in the window, between the glass and the screen. Are you near one of the Great Lakes? Is that what this Lake Effect weather is about?

  2. I love a snowfall before there are any tire marks, footprints or dirty snow. The way it sparkles when the sun hits it makes it look like diamonds. Hope however much you get it will be manageable.!

  3. Hi Alice,
We are expecting a Polar Vortex to drop our temperatures for the next week.
Since we are a little north of the lake, you can blame it for causing the lake effect snow.
Are you looking forward to Groundhog day, it marks the halfway point through the winter season?
