Of bears and boys

It’s day 22 of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge and of Inktober. Today’s prompt is camp.

Baby Bear was walking to the place where the bears were staying for a few days, prior to climbing the mountain. He was excited about singing songs and eating a feast with his bear family and friends. As he walked, he noticed a tent and then, he saw the boy who had taken him out of his cousin’s backpack and showed him the beach.

“Hi,” said Baby Bear. “Do you want to come and sing and have a feast with my family and me?”

“I wish I could,” said the boy. “But my parents told me not to go too far. They said that it would get dark and that I had to be careful of wild animals.”

“Oh,” said Baby Bear. “Are you afraid of animals? Do you think that they are scary?”

“No,” said the boy. “But my parents are afraid. And soon, we are going to travel far in a boat and go live in the Land of the Humans.”

“I shall be sad to see you go,” said Baby Bear. “Why don’t you stay with us?”

“A time is coming when humans and bears won’t be able to talk to each other. I hear adults talking about how we have to be the most important species and all of the animals have to be our servants. And, if they don’t want to be our servants, we are supposed to make them comply.”

“I don’t know if I like that,” said Baby Bear.

“I don’t like it,” said the boy. “But I don’t have the power to do anything about it.”

“You will find the power that you have within you, and you will fly,” said Baby Bear. “I learned that from the condor.”

“I have to go,” said the boy. “I love you. I hope that I can see you again.”

And, with that, the boy went inside the test.

Baby Bear continued walking until he returned to the rest of the bears. He felt a weight inside of him that he did not previously have.

  1. Wouldn’t it be great in real time if people cared about all the animals more than just building more homes and leaving the animals displaces. That’s what’s happening down here.

    1. True, and then people start complaining about the animals and saying that they are nuisances, without thinking that they have stolen the animals’ habitat, leaving the animals with nowhere to go but the humans’ back yards!

  2. Ooh, wow! That’s a big shift in the story. I love the idea that at one time, animals and humans could really talk to each other. But I don’t love that somehow, humans got it into their minds that they were supposed to be separate and superior. Ugh! Well, I can’t wait to read more of the story!
